Midlands rugby community honours veterans

  • Peter Grace and Bob Jones served as RFU Council Member and Warwickshire President respectively

Two Midlands rugby stalwarts will be celebrating their 75th birthdays in style with matches in their honour in the comings weeks.

Peter Grace, the former long-serving RFU Council Member for North Midlands, is first to the landmark and he will celebrate with a day of festivities at his club Five Ways OE at Hopwood near Birmingham on October 27.

Then Bob Jones, the former Warwickshire President, will celebrate his 75th birthday with a charity rugby match at Southam on November 17.

Peter Grace’s celebrations will include two veterans matches, the first between Five Ways and near neighbours Kings Norton at 1.15pm followed by Greater Birmingham v Worcestershire & Herefordshire, featuring well-known players from North Midlands, at 2.30pm.

Bob Reeves, the RFU President, will be a guest of honour to pay tribute to Grace who served on the RFU Council for 16 years before he retired in the summer of 2012.

Jones, who was Warwickshire President in 2010 and 2011, will be raising money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association and Southam RFC from his birthday match, which will also include well-known past and present players from across Warwickshire.

The match will kick off at 2pm at Southam’s Kineton Road ground.
