John Brake and Mike Ellery return to the England Sevens squad for the second leg of the FIRA-AER European Grand Prix Series in Moscow this weekend (28-29 June).
Both have been out of action with injury for over six months but are now staking a claim for a place at this summer's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, a tournament which begins a month tomorrow.
England finished seventh in the first FIRA competition in Lyon at the start of this month when they fielded a developing side.
Both Charlie Hayter and Mark Bright impressed and will now feature alongside the experienced James Rodwell, Tom Powell, Tom Mitchell, Dan Bibby and Dan Norton, who run out for the first time since securing an overall fourth place in the HSBC Sevens World Series at the Marriott London Sevens in May.
England Sevens Head Coach Simon Amor said: “Both Mike Ellery and John Brake have put in some excellent performances for us during the World Series so it’s great to have them back in time to put their hands up for the Games. Mike brings power and physicality in his position and John’s determination is a real asset to the team.
“We are approaching this tournament with the Commonwealth Games very much in mind. The squad are still going through an intense conditioning period but it is a great opportunity to try out different combinations against strong competition.”
France were convincing winners in Lyon, beating Belgium 40-10 in the final. England play Les Bleus in their second pool match on Saturday (1pm local/10am BST). They also take on Georgia (11.06am local/8.06am BST) and Romania (4pm local/1pm BST).
