Scrum Down This Summer
From a city centre beach to the real thing at Newquay's Lusty Glaze, the O2
Scrum on the Beach events stirred up the enthusiasm of rugby fans of all ages
and engaged a brand new audience in the game.
Sand among the lions at Trafalgar Square, London was a hit with both novices
and celebs, Sackey and Haskell delighting the crowds and joining in with all the
action. It was quite simply an all-round good family day out with something for everyone.
The 'pitch-up-and-play' feel got everyone stuck in all over the country with over
65,000 people enjoying the five events. In Birmingham, Bournemouth Newquay and
Newcastle they turned up in their thousands. 300 players in Newcastle, 30 touch
rugby teams alone and 64 teams among the surfers and wall-to-wall crowds in Cornwall.
And while it wasn't about winning there was no shortage of talent young and old.
"The key thing about these events is that you get a little taste of the sport and it
really ignites your passion for it" said Haskell.
O2 Scrum On the Beach will be back next summer, re-igniting passion for the game and
showing there's a whole lot more to it than just scrums and line-outs. But until then
try typing in your town on our find a club page to see where
you can get involved straight away.
