Missing the England tour to South America last June through an ankle injury was a huge disappointment for Joel Tomkins but making his Test debut in the 20-13 win over Australia at Twickenham five months later was rich compensation, along with starts against Argentina and New Zealand in subsequent weeks.
He joined Saracens in November 2011 after a cross-code switch from Wigan Warriors rugby league club, having played his first match for Wigan in 2005 at the age of 18 against Widnes. Joel didn’t look back in the 13-man game, going on to figure in 125 games before moving south. An England rugby league international, he made his debut against France in 2010, subsequently winning four caps.
Joel, once a classmate of fellow England squad member Chris Ashton at St John Fisher Catholic HS in Wigan, has featured across the backline for Saracens since his debut. Before moving to Saracens, he demonstrated his skills by running in a length-of-the-field try in the 2011 Challenge Cup final to help Wigan to a 28-18 win.
He scored two tries on his Saracens debut in the LV= Cup against Worcester Warriors and up to the start of the 2013 QBE Internationals had made 29 appearances in the Aviva Premiership and bagged four tries, two of them against Gloucester in April this year.
His first match for England Saxons was in the starting side that beat Ireland Wolfhounds 14-10 in Galway in late January this year and he also played against Scotland A at Kingston Park, Newcastle the following week.
