Consistency and durability have brought the reward of nine Test caps for Lee Dickson, who figured in four of England’s five tour games in June last year. The exception was the third and final Test against South Africa in which he was an unused bench replacement. It added impetus to his impressive return from a broken jaw sustained in a pre-season match in 2010 against Leinster Rugby and the shoulder injury that ruled him out of England’s end-of-campaign game against the Barbarians and the subsequent Churchill Cup.
He said: "I was a bit gutted coming back after my shoulder injury, getting fit and having the boys around and breaking my jaw was quite a tough one. But I'm back now and it’s behind me."
A member of the Saxons squad that won Churchill Cup tournament in 2007, he had played for the England U21 Grand Slam side the previous year. Born in Germany to an English mother and Scottish father, he had represented Scotland U19, played for Newcastle Falcons and has since been a bustling presence behind the Saints' pack.
By the end of last season, he had appeared in 138 Premiership games, comprising 41 for the Falcons from 2004-08 and 97 in five seasons for the Saints. During his spell with the Falcons, he captained their academy side in the Radio Borders Kings of the Sevens League and under his command they won tournaments at Hawick and Langholm and finished as runners-up to Watsonians at Peebles.
He was also an Amlin Challenge Cup winner with the Saints when they beat Bourgoin 15-3 in the 2009 final at Twickenham Stoop. Lee also shared in their 30-24 LV=Cup final victory over Gloucester Rugby at Sixways the following year.
Lee signed a contract extension to his existing deal with Northampton in May 2011 keeping him at Franklin's Gardens until the summer of 2014.
Director of rugby Jim Mallinder said at the time: "Over the past three years Lee has shown how important he is to the team. He plays at a consistently high level and demands the best from both himself and the players around him."
Dylan Hartley, the Saints captain, hooker and now England squad mate, also described Lee as the "heartbeat" of the Northampton side.
