Opportunity knocks again for Kearnan Myall, who was originally drafted into the Saxons’ squad for the match against Portugal at Edgeley Park, Stockport four years ago. He then replaced London Wasps captain Tom Rees, an absentee from the subsequent Churchill Cup party through a series of shoulder injuries that forced him to remain at home for rehabilitation.
Huddersfield-born Kearnan, who signed for Sale Sharks from Leeds Carnegie in 2011, played in 55 games for the Manchester-based club before joining London Wasps for 2013-14. He had impressed during Carnegie’s successful battle against relegation from the Premiership in 2009-10.
He joined the Leeds Academy at the age of 15 and has fulfilled the initial promise he showed when helping the club to win the National Colts Cup in 2004, the year he represented England U18 Clubs in the Home Nations tournament in Belfast.
Two seasons later, he made his first team debut off the bench against Sale in the Powergen Cup, a significant step up from his earlier appearances for Holmfirth and Huddersfield YMCA. He appeared 127 times for Leeds and scored 12 tries before crossing the Pennines along with Carnegie club mates Luther Burrell, Hendre Fourie and Scott Mathie to join the Sharks. In his final campaign for Leeds, he made 28 appearances and played the full 80 minutes in all except seven of those games.
Kearnan had figured in 99 Premiership matches – 58 for Leeds and 41 for the Sharks – by the start of the 2013/4 season.
