An impact player, Alex Cheesman has the athleticism to play at centre or in the back row and his talents have not only been recognised by England Sevens but also London Wasps where he has been on trial.
Since completing his third year of geography studies at St Edmund Hall, Oxford, London-born Alex played for Wasps in the inaugural round of the J P Morgan Asset Management Premiership Sevens at Twickenham Stoop in mid July.
He has previously played for Marlow, Henley Hawks, London Wasps Under 18, Academy and A team and more recently Sale Sharks. Alex was also a member of the England Under 19 assessment squad and appeared in the Under 21s Varsity Match three years ago before winning two Blues.
First he figured off the bench for Oxford in the 33-29 win over Cambridge at Twickenham in 2008 before starting at centre and scoring an injury time try that still could not prevent the Dark Blues from losing 31-27 last December. He also helped Oxford to finish third in the second annual Casablanca University Sevens tournament in April.
Initially educated at Danesfield School, Medmenham, Alex went on to RGS High Wycombe where his language skills were appreciated during a three week rugby tour to South America.
Many of the squad’s hosts spoke only Spanish so Alex and three other Spanish A level students ordered food for everyone, sorted out lost luggage and took turns to make after dinner speeches.
He’s definitely a handy man to have around – and not just on the field.
