Profile

Joining Christian Lewis-Pratt for the Tokyo leg of the IRB World Sevens Series at the end of March 2012 revived ‘old times’ for former London Irish player Sam Edgerley. He joined Rosslyn Park from Esher last year and made his debut in the Japan tournament, along the way to scoring 11 tries overall in nine IRB events. They include the one after the hooter that beat Wales 24-21 to secure third place in the Glasgow tournament in May.

Both Sam and Christian were first team captains in their respective years at Wellington College. They were members of the college’s 2008 Daily Mail Cup winning side and the victorious team at the 2009 Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens in which Sam ran in the crucial try and Christian led the team.

Sam, whose father Bill captained Esher in the 1980s, won the player-of-the-tournament trophy when the club reached the final of the Middlesex Sevens for the first time in July 2011. He scored a try in every game and two in the 26-24 first round victory over HFW Wailers. Esher lost 55-12 to Samurai in the final but Sam’s performance prompted his selection for England Sevens in the fourth and final stage of the FIRA European Grand Prix Sevens Series in Bucharest.

At 15-a-side level, he played in four preparatory games for England U18 in 2008-09 against South West Academies, London Academies, North Academies and Midlands Academies before appearing in matches against Scotland (twice), Japan High Schools, Italy and on tour against Boland and Western Province in South Africa.

He went on to share in the England U20 victory by 16-10 over Italy at San Dona di Piave after being a second-half replacement for Jonny May, of Gloucester. Sam joined London Irish in July 2010 and his 14 appearances last season for Championship club Esher included a 43-10 victory over London Scottish in the British & Irish Cup in October 2011.
