Callum Chick, the son of Brian, the head coach of Ponteland RFC and a former Newcastle Gosforth back-row forward, has graduated to the U18 squad after being the England U16 Player of the Year in 2013. He made his U18 debut in the 28-6 win over Scotland at Dalziel RFC in March and then played in all three matches when England lifted the FIRA/AER European Championship title in Poland. Newcastle-born Callum was also man of the match in the 32-26 win over Wales at Oxford University in April last year. That is his most memorable game so far.
A former prop, he is a member of the Newcastle Falcons Academy and is studying maths, physics, chemistry and rugby, along with general studies at Gosforth Academy. He was previously educated at Ponteland Middle School and High School and is eager to go to university to study physics and astrophysics or aeronautical engineering. Playing for England at Test level is also on his ‘wants list’.
His previous rugby honours include Northumberland U15 and U16 and the North U16 and he has also represented his county in discus and shot and competed in the National Championships.
Callum’s mentors are Newcastle Falcons Academy manager Mark Laycock, head coach James Ponting and his own father Brian while he acknowledges the help that PJ Butler, his school coach, has given him. England U18 coaches John Fletcher and Peter Walton are also adding valuable input.
The players, past and present, that he admires reads like a ‘who’s who’ of gifted forwards, who appear in his own No.8 position. He lists Kieran Read, Nick Easter, Sergio Parisse, Billy Vunipola, Louis Picamoles and Zinzan Brooke.
