Market Bosworth RFC was where Owen Hills first picked up a ball and ran at the age of four. Educated at St Peter’s Primary and Dixie Grammar School in the Leicestershire town, he is now taking a course in business studies, design and technology and physical education at Wyggeston & Queen Elizabeth I College in Leicester.
He is a member of the Tigers Academy, made his England U18 debut off the bench in the 28-6 win over Scotland at Dalziel RFC, Motherwell in early March this year and played in all three matches when the side won the FIRA/AER European Championship for the third consecutive year in Poland the following month. His past mentors have been Steve Hargreaves and Andrew Finn at Market Bosworth and his present ones are Neil McCarthy, Tosh Askew and Kevin Mannion at the Tigers Academy.
Redditch-born Owen represented Leicestershire U15 and U16 and Midlands U16 and aims to play as many games as possible for the Tigers and to study sports science at university.
He was sportsman of the year at his school in 2012-13, having already been the U16 players’ player for Market Bosworth and coaches’ player at U14 and U15 level for the club. His highlights so far include scoring a try for Tigers in the 29-26 win over Northampton Saints at Welford Road in the U18 league.
In his early days, he played on the wing and moved to prop at the age of ten. His favourite players are Marcos Ayerza and Dan Cole while tennis and clay pigeon shooting are his hobbies.
