When first playing at Sutton & Epsom RFC, Stanley South would not have even imagined he would pull on an England shirt but he did just that on his U18 debut against Scotland at Dalziel RFC in March this year. He also played in two matches in the subsequent FIRA/AER European Championship, including the final. A student at Whitgift, taking a Level 3 BTEC in Sport & Exercise Science, he had previously attended Brandon Hill Primary School and Stanley Park HS in Wallington.
Southampton-born Stanley is a member of Harlequins Academy, appeared for Sutton & Epsom for 11 years and played for McGlashan College in Dunedin from February to August last year. His mentors are Chris Wilkins at Whitgift School and Howard Graham and Jim Evans at Harlequins.
He represented Surrey U15-U18 and London & South-East U16 and has captained Sutton & Epsom U16, Surrey U16 and U17, Harlequins U18 and the Whiftgift first team. His father Bruce played rugby for 30 years and was a European judo champion.
Stanley’s favourite match was when Whitgift beat John Fisher 25-24 in the final minutes of a match and his hobbies are swimming, hunting and fishing. He used to play in the back row and his top ground is Allianz Park. Ireland’s Paul O’Connell and Neil Back, the former Leicester Tigers and England flanker, are his favourite players.
