Since taking up the game when six at Old Patesians, a Cheltenham-based club, Will Safe has put together a collection of representative honours leading to his biggest one so far as a member of the England U18 squad. He made his debut at that level in the starting side that beat Scotland 28-6 at Dalziel RFC in March this year and figured in all three matches when the squad won the FIRA/AER European Championship the following month.
Will is taking a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport (Performance & Excellence) at Hartpury College, having attended Cheltenham Bournside School and Sixth Form Centre and Leckhampton C of E Primary School, also in Cheltenham. Stratton-born, he is a member of the Gloucester Academy and has benefited from the help of Patesians coach Mark Peacey.
His present mentors are Sean Marsden, the Hartpury head coach, Mark Cornwell the defence and line out coach there and Peter Buxton, the Gloucester Academy coach. Will previously represented Cheltenham District U15 and U16 and Gloucestershire U16, has captained Gloucester U18 Academy and Patesians U16 and has won awards at Patesians as most improve player, coaches’ player and players’ player.
He went to Japan with Hartpury for the Sanix World Youth tournament and away from rugby, he finished second in the U16 National Jujitsu Championship. Will’s father Andrew has played the game and his own favourite match was when Gloucester beat Leicester Tigers at U18 level to reverse a 48-15 defeat in the previous year.
The players he most respects are Lewis Moody, Jonah Lomu, Jonny Wilkinson, Martin Johnson, Dan Lydiate and Tom Croft and Twickenham is his top ground.
