A Gloucester newcomer from Leicester Tigers for 2014-15, Henry Purdy had been a member of London Wasps Elite Player Development Group for two years before spending another two at Welford Road. His senior Tigers’ debut was against Saracens in the LV= Cup in November 2012.
Educated at Burford School and Cokethorpe School, Oxford-born Henry first played when seven at Chipping Norton RFC and went on to appear for Oxfordshire Schools U16 and U18, South West U18 and England U18 Clubs and Schools.
He said: “Larry Cummins, Gareth Rees and Lloyd Morgan all made a big impact on my rugby throughout my time at Cokethorpe and Tosh Askew now mentors me in the Tigers Academy. I’d want to be a successful professional and play internationally at as many levels as possible. I’d also like to study either Business or Sports Science at university in the near future.
“My most memorable match was when we beat Wales in the 2013 IRB Junior World Championship final in Vannes last year.” A year on, Henry shared in England’s second successive title triumph, appearing in four games in New Zealand.
Henry scored one of England’s five tries in the 40-10 triumph over France at Worcester in February 2013 on the way to winning the U20 Six Nations title. He was then called into the squad for the IRB Junior World Championship that June to replace Mark Jennings, of Sale Sharks, who had sustained an arm injury. Henry played in all five matches, scored a try against South Africa and two more in the game against the United States. He added another when the U20 side beat Scotland 48-15 at Galashiels in February this year.
His favourite players are Julian Savea, Sonny Bill Williams and Kieran Read and Twickenham is his top ground.
