Profile

Born in the village of Steeton between Skipton and Keighley in Yorkshire, Jack Walker relishes his family links with the game. His late father Johnny was in the England U21 squad, played for Otley and in rugby league for Keighley, Hunslet, Batley and Wakefield. Jack said: “He made it possible for me to achieve everything so far, has been a great inspiration and I have huge respect for him.”

Jack’s older brother Chris played for England U16 before captaining the U18 and U20 side and becoming a member of the Leeds Carnegie squad. In March last year, Jack agreed a four-year contract with the club at the same time that Chris committed himself to another two years at Headingley Carnegie.

Captaining Yorkshire U15 and U16, the North U16 and England U16 and playing for the national U17 sides signposted the way forward for Jack, a product of Yorkshire One club North Ribblesdale. Jack represented England U18 ten times, graduated to U20 level and figured in all five matches when the side lifted the |IRB Junior World Championship title in June.

In December 2012, he had been among five young athletes receiving special recognition awards from the Jaguar Academy of Sport at the Savoy in London.

Jack said: “It was an incredible experience to be around people like Jessica Ennis, Denise Lewis and Sir Steve Redgrave. Gareth Edwards presented me with the award, which was special considering what he has achieved in the sport.”

He has been studying for a BTEC in Sport and an NVQ in Rugby at Prince Henry’s Grammar School, having attended Settle Middle School and Settle College, where the North Ribblesdale club is based. He was with them from the age of six to 16.

Jack, whose most admired player is Schalk Brits, was a fly half at school and moved to hooker at U13 level. Sporting success is not restricted to the male side of the family, either. Jack’s mum, Suzanne, represented Zimbabwe as a swimmer.
