The launch pad for Jonny Hill’s rugby career dates back to when he was nine and started playing at Herefordshire-based National Two North club Luctonians. He was born in Shropshire and attended Ludlow Junior School and Ludlow Church of England School before studying at Hartpury College, where he is now back on loan from Gloucester.
Jonny is a member of the academy at Kingsholm and his biggest moment so far was playing against Northampton Saints in the LV= Cup last November. He has represented Herefordshire & Worcestershire at age group level and said: “Having James Hudson and Alex Brown at Kingsholm is a massive bonus because they mentor me and are both great tacticians in the lineout.
“I want to play in the Premiership for as many years as possible, gain international caps and earn enough money to buy a farm.” While at Hartpury, he was a member of the side that won the AASE league in two successive seasons. He continued: “They were my most memorable matches so far and I scored a try in the first one that was played at Twickenham.”
Paul Loughlin, Jonny’s uncle, played rugby league as a centre for St Helens, Bradford Bulls and Great Britain and his own top players are Bakkies Botha, Sean O’Brien and Gloucester lock Elliott Stooke. Jonny added: “I have played in the back row and did fancy myself as a fly half when I took up the game.” Kingsholm is his favourite ground. His U20 baptism was off the bench in the 67-7 win over Wales this March and he started alongside Tom Ellis in the second row in the 52-5 triumph over Italy in Calvisano.
