Profile

Playing at home town club Rochdale launched the rugby ambitions of Nathan Fowles, who is on an academy contract with Sale Sharks and trains with the first team squad on a full-time basis. His Premiership debut was at Bath last September and his initial start for the side was against Cardiff Blues in the Heineken Cup.

He was with Rochdale, initially at the age of six from 1999 until 2009 and Preston Grasshoppers, where he was on loan last season. Before playing twice this year at U20 level, he had won international honours only for English Colleges, although he had represented Lancashire U16, U17, U18 and seniors, together with the North U18 team.

Educated at St Anselms RC Primary School, Cardinal Langley RC High School in Middleton, Manchester and Myerscough College, Nathan has present mentors in Peter Anglesea, Ray Unsworth and Bryan Redpath at Sale Sharks. His previous guidance came from Lancashire age group coaches Jason Duffy, Dino Radice and Donny Sutherland. Steve Gough has coached him at Myerscough College and also at Sale Sharks EPDG while Phil Leck has also been of great assistance to him.

Nathan helped England U20 to lift the RBS 6 Nations title this year and said: “I also hope to win the IRB Junior World Championship this summer. Outside the game, I should like a career in physiotherapy or as a paramedic. Alternatively, I want to become a well respected rugby coach one day.”

He has toured Southern France with Lancashire U18, been to Montpellier and Toulon in this season’s Heineken Cup and spent a summer placement with Border Bulldogs at East London in South Africa. His most memorable match was the AASE Plate final for Myerscough College against Moulton College. He said: “We were losing by two points with two minutes left on the clock. We went through 15 phases of play before getting a penalty in the opposition’s 22. I kicked it to make us victorious by one point!”

Nathan’s favourite players are Will Genia, Jonny Wilkinson, Dan Carter, Morgan Parra and Dimitri Yachivili and his top grounds are Stade Mayol in Toulon, the Recreation Ground, Bath and Welford Road, Leicester.
