Profile

Studies at Kimbolton School in Cambridgeshire and at Millfield foreshadowed Richard Lane joining the Bath Rugby Academy in which he is now in his second year. He made his senior debut for the club in the LV= Cup against Exeter Chiefs at Sandy Park and is dual-registered with Rosslyn Park.

Richard was a member of the Northampton Saints Junior Academy from the age of 16 to 18 but his first steps in the game were for the Bedford Junior Blues, where he played from six to 13 before attending Millfield from 2006-11. He was at Kimbolton School until he was 12.

His Millfield mentors were former England prop John Mallett, who was also his houseparent for two years, and Jonathan Brimacombe and his present influential figure is former England lock Danny Grewcock, now the Bath Academy manager.

Richard was Millfield’s vice captain in 2010-11, led the school’s U16 Sevens team that won the South West tournament, the All England Sevens and the Rosslyn Park National Schools title. He toured Canada and South Africa with Millfield teams but has yet to wear an England jersey at any level.

Simon, his father, played football for Crouch End Vampires and Richard’s own highlights include appearing in the Daily Mail U15 Cup final against Wellington at Twickenham, his favourite ground. He said: “We lost but the whole experience was something I shall never forget.” His debut for Bath was another memorable occasion.

Richard added: “Jonny Wilkinson has always been someone that I admire, along with Israel Dagg who, as a back three player, I enjoy watching when he’s on the field for the Crusaders and New Zealand.”
