Four tries in two matches for England U18 spanning a week in March last year added to the career of Torbay-born Stuart Townsend, who played for the national U16 and U17 sides before scoring five tries in his first five games for the U18 team. Now training full-time with Exeter Chiefs, he made his senior debut in the final two minutes of an LV= Cup match against London Welsh last season and won his first U20 caps in February and March this year.
He played for Kingsbridge RFC from the U6 side upwards and went to Kingsbridge Primary and Community College before attending Ivybridge Community College, where he has been studying for a BTEC in Sports Performance and Excellence. His new role with the Chiefs, who have signed him a year early, means he is an independent learner at Ivybridge.
Stuart has captained Kingsbridge age group teams, Devon U16 and the Chiefs Academy sides and also appeared for South West U16. His school coach Gary Burman and Ricky Pellow and Rob Gibson, at the Chiefs, have mentored Stuart. He was also a member of sides that won the Devon Cup for his school and club and appeared for England U16 in Italy two seasons ago.
He said: “My most memorable matches were my England U16 debut and winning the National Cup final in Year 7 at Twickenham when I scored the vital try. Ben Youngs and Jonny Wilkinson are my favourite players and Sandy Park, Exeter is my top ground.”
