As a member of a family that excels at sport, Tom Ellis is continuing a deep tradition. Somerset born and bred, he represented England U16 against Italy, has been a member of the Bath Academy since 2009/10 and has been studying geography, psychology and PE at AS and A level at Millfield School. His began his education at Butleigh Primary School and appeared in every U20 Six Nations match this year together with another against Italy in the Junior World Championship in New Zealand.

Tom first played at Tor RFC when he was six and appeared for England U18 in preparatory games last season against Northampton Saints and Leicester Tigers, before starting the match against France that his side won 18-16 at Fylde in February 2012. He subsequently came off the bench against Scotland at Hawick.

His father Michael and grandfather Ray played for Plymouth Albion. Ray, a lock, also led Devon to the County Championship title in 1957 and was a Barbarian before becoming involved at every level off the field from club, through county to national level.

Tom’s great-great grandfather Arthur Mold played cricket for Lancashire and England and uncle Brian Roberts threw the javelin for Great Britain. As Millfield Prep School Player of the Year in 2006, Tom’s rugby prospects have grown. He said: “I have been inspired by reading the biography of Lawrence Dallaglio, the player I most admire. John Mallett and John Brimacombe were my current mentors at Millfield.”

He says his first guiding influence was schoolteacher Chris English. Tom has also captained school teams and enjoyed the Ten Tors and completed various challenges needed in working towards the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver awards.

Away from rugby, he represented the South West in the national athletics finals at shot put and high jump and Somerset at 800 metres and basketball.
