Scoring a debut try against Spain at Rovereto in the European Cup pool match in May last year gave Lauren Cattell a jubilant start to her senior England career at the age of 18. She made the last of her side’s 11 touchdowns when playing off the bench for Danielle Waterman after 62 minutes.
Lauren started the next game, contributed a conversion in the 32-8 victory over hosts Italy, played at full back in the 76-0 win over Scotland this February and figured off the bench against Ireland before reverting to the No.15 jersey against France, Italy and Wales. She took up studies in Strength & Conditioning at St Mary’s University College, Twickenham last September.
Born in High Wycombe and initially educated at Ashlyns School, Berkhamstead, she went to Moulton College on an AASE (Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence) programme. Her mentor there has been Jon Phillips, the course manager, coach and former Northampton Saints and Bedford Blues player. She first played when eight for Chesham Stags, appeared for Bucks Jesters and spent three years with her college team.
Before winning her first full cap, Lauren represented England U20 against France and has also been a member of the South West side. Two years ago, she was player of the tournament at the Rosslyn Park Sevens and also player of the year at Moulton College.
As a sideline, she plays netball and helped Moulton to finish third in a national basketball competition in 2011.
