Mercedes has made a big change to her rugby career latterly. She played tight head prop for nine years before converting to hooker last season. She is a very proud T-Bird having played for Thurrock since 2002 at the age of 16. She has been captain of the successful side since 2007, a time in which the team has moved on leaps and bounds.
Indeed, skippering sides is something she has done for many years. She led the Brunel University team in her time there between 2005 and 2008, she wore the armband for the London & South East division in 2013.
It is clear that Mercedes wants to be heavily involved and her feats have been recognised as she won the RFU President's XV award for Girl Power and a similar award for fundraising for Thurrock. Indeed, raising funds for her club and for charity is one of the things she spends much of her spare time doing although she also enjoys her time in the gym and time in the kitchen cooking. She was also a talented shot putter at school. Talking of which...
Educated at Bulphan C of E Primary School in the borough of Thurrock and at Grays Convent High School before heading to Brunel University to grab a BSc (Hons) in Physical and Secondary Education with QTS, Mercedes has spent the majority of her time in the London and Essex areas, somewhere she had to leave to represent England in the Nations Cup in the USA in 2013.
She thanks Simon Culley for helping her game develop at University while Dean White, Jamie Daisley and Chris Emerson all deserve a name check from her long stint at Thurrock. The players she admires are headed up by Tom Youngs.
Mercedes is a PE teacher at William Edwards School.
