As a speedy winger you won’t be too surprised to hear that Sophie, who is currently a 2nd year student at Durham University where she is studying Anthropology, names Jason Robinson as her rugby hero. The Londoner is currently turning some heads in her University team too after she took up the sport as a seven year-old at Leighton Buzzard RFC. She has since represented England under-20s in the Nations Cup of 2013 where she played against the USA, Canada and South Africa. She scored a try in the final play of the game with the hosts.
Like a number of the promising crop of England rugby stars, Sophie has excelled in other sports as well most notably lacrosse, a sport she still likes to have a go at. She represented the Hertfordshire county side and the East Region in that sport while she also did pretty well at the high jump.
Rugby has always been with her although not the world of Union. In fact, her grandfather, Gerry Round won caps for Great Britain as a full back in Rugby League. He also made a handful of Challenge Cup final appearances and achieved the distinction of being named as Great Britain’s full back against Australia in 1959 after making only 29 appearances in the senior game. Sophie will hope to keep the family flag flying.
