When asked who she admires most in rugby, Devon replied with: “Any player that has come back from an injury, especially two of my teammates Tatyana Heard and Emily Houghton who both came back from big injuries to be playing again the following year.” That says a lot about the character of the 19 year-old scrum half from Hampshire. She also went on to say she admires any gymnast and ultimate frisbee players.
Her own life in the sport of rugby started at the age of nine. She remembers: “My brother started at Aldermaston RFC and I went along to watch, they persuaded me to join.” And from there she went on to play for Reading RFC from 2006-2013 before joining up with Bristol Ladies.
It was at Reading RFC however, where she played her most memorable match to date: “I played my first Under 18s match at Reading RFC, I was so nervous but went on to score three tries,” she says. The club also gave her her funniest moment in rugby. Devon takes up the story: “Playing for Reading versus Maiden Earley, I passed the ball to my team mate, she ran and broke through a tackle but someone had hold of her shorts and she pulled them all the way down, but she ran the rest of the pitch with her bum out and scored the try!”
After Burnham Copse Infant and Junior School in Tadley and The Willink Secondary school in Berkshire, Devon found her way to Hartpury College in Gloucester to study for a Sports Diploma. It was here that Danielle Waterman, the coach at Hartpury and current England Elite player, made Devon make the switch from full back to scrum half and she's never looked back.
Away from studying and the rugby paddock, Devon likes to relax in the gym (is that possible?) or watching films with her friends, Ratatouille being her favourite flick. There must be something about small furry animals in cartoons as her dream job would be working at Disneyland in Florida.
