One thing that Fran wouldn’t mind – surely – as a rugby player is when she has to play in the wet. That’s because she is a former lifeguard at DC Leisure Arena in Camberley and names the sport of surfing as one of her favourite things to do outside of rugby. Back on terra firma, she now works as a gardener in Camberley and also as a fitness instructor at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford.
Fran’s younger sister, Alex, is an England team mate, too, which should mean that the Matthews name is synonymous with English women’s rugby for some years to come.
Educated at Watchetts Junior and Kings International College in Camberley, she went on to East Durham and Houghall Community College in Durham where she took a BTEC National Diploma in Sports Fitness. England prop David Wilson was also a student there.
As well as her specialist role on the wing, Fran has also appeared at centre and at full back in the past, a past which saw here represent England at five different levels – Under-19s, under-20s, A, Sevens and seniors. Her career is a classic example of moving through the ranks to get to the very top level.
Fran’s interests outside of rugby include watching films, ski-ing and travel. Naturally, as a sportswoman, fitness and nutrition play an important role in Fran’s life although she does enjoy baking cakes as well.
