A wide range of support is available for match officials at all levels.

For new or inexperienced referees, the Entry Level Referee Award (ELRA) offers an outstanding introduction to refereeing a game of rugby union and will equip you with the skills and confidence to do so effectively. The ELRA is recognised by the RFU as a formal refereeing qualification.

If you are only refereeing mini and midi matches you may wish to attend the mini midi refereeing course. This is not recognised by the RFU as a formal qualification; however, you will receive a Certificate of Attendance and it will equip you with the basic knowledge required to referee at mini midi levels.. For society match officials there are a range of other refereeing courses.

Advice on how to start refereeing or choosing an appropriate course, please contact a member of the RFU Referee Development Team (PDF 102kB).
