Rugby Union has been played in England since it was said that William Webb Ellis of Rugby School caught the ball and ran, deciding that he didn’t like the hand-ball rule in football. If you don’t like that rule either, rugby could be the sport for you.
Since those beginnings in1823, Rugby Union has become one of the most played and watched sports the world. In England, we became the best in the world when Martin Johnson lifted the Rugby World Cup in Australia in 2003, and the whole game has continued to grow at all levels ever since.
Thousands of young people of all shapes, sizes and abilities play rugby throughout the nation every week of the season.
Some play with the aim of playing at the highest level; some play because they enjoy the friendship; some play because it is a team sport; some because the whole family is welcome; and some simply to get active and fit.
But they all play, above all, because it is great fun!
If you want to be the next Jonny Wilkinson, Danny Cipriani or Paul Sackey then your school is a great place to start.
Whether you are new to the game, have reached the landmark of your first full season, or are now a veteran of two seasons or more, we have loads of information about the world of Rugby Union. Right the way from the England team down to the greenest grass roots.
