Jamie Walton

Getting up close & personal with NYC member Jamie Walton

What made you want to be part of the NYC?

I want to make the voice of young people involved in rugby heard. I have been involved in rugby through various means for more than five years and have witnessed first-hand the opportunities and experiences that rugby can give to young people. I want to make these opportunities open and accessible to everyone, making people aware of what they can become involved in, as well as increasing the opportunities available.

What do you want to achieve by being involved?

Personally I would like to continue the time I have had in rugby union, as I have thoroughly enjoyed getting involved in volunteering and playing the sport. I want to encourage this passion for sport in others, further increasing my own participation and making a difference to the sport at a national level. I want young people to see what can be achieved and what is available to them and I feel through the NYC I can help develop new experiences and open the existing opportunities to more young people.

Why did you get involved with rugby Union?

When I was seven I wanted to get involved with a new sport. One Sunday morning I went to try out rugby and never looked back. I have always enjoyed taking part in the sport and hope to do so for a long time to come.

How are you involved in rugby?

I have been playing rugby since the age of seven. Over time I got more involved with rugby union by volunteering at and organising festivals. I have also completed my level 1 coaching qualification and the Entry Level Referee Award; I have also been recently involved in coaching and refereeing schools’ teams. Now I have moved to University in Plymouth I want to continue this alongside my work with the NYC.

Who inspires you?

Lewis Moody because of his drive, commitment to do well and the fact he always gives 100%.

What do you do for fun?

I enjoy being involved in rugby but aside from that I love spending time with friends and taking part in outdoor sports such as camping, hiking and fishing.

If you were an animal what would you be and why?

A dog, because I’m enthusiastic and I like to get involved in things.

Favourite TV show?

Big Bang Theory, Top Gear and the Inbetweeners.
