Spirit of Rugby – Zurich Rugby Photography of the Year

On display at the Museum of Rugby in May, June and July 2003 was the inaugural Zurich Rugby Photograph of the Year Exhibition.

Professional sports photographers were invited to enter images that captured the ‘Spirit of Rugby’. The photographs could be serious or light-hearted, action shots, snapshots of the emotion of fans or even a look behind the scenes.

They were asked to encapsulate the passion, loyalty and dedication of the modern game of rugby, from grassroots to international level.

There were two categories to enter, colour and black & white.

Out of 200 fantastic entries received by Zurich, 49 photographs were shortlisted and featured at a winners exhibition in London in December 2003.

The competition was judged by five rugby enthusiasts:

Will Greenwood, England and NEC Harlequins
Paul Morgan, Editor, Rugby World
Sarah O’Rafferty, Head of Sponsorship, Zurich
Nick Wainwright, Mail on Sunday Pictures
Clive Woodward, England Head Coach
