With the England v Scotland Match coming up at Twickenham in March, this month’s featured object is a dinner menu from 1881. The dinner was hosted at the Waterloo Hotel, Edinburgh on Saturday evening March 19, 1881.

The match was postponed twice before finally being played on March 19. One of the Scottish players, H.H. Taylor turned up at the wrong station, saw none of his team mates and returned home, meaning that F.T. Wright had to be brought into the team to replace him.

L. Stokes playing his last game for England scored a historic 80 yard drop goal from the touchline. This was followed by an unconverted try. The match resulted controversially in a draw after a try was scored and then converted for Scotland by J.B. Brown and T.A. Begbie respectively.

After the match English officials put forward a case for using neutral referees in future games, which was introduced the following year.
