October’s object of the month is a presentation made to George Rowland Hill to mark the 25th anniversary of his being elected Honorary Secretary to the RFU and to commemorate his standing down as President. The presentation took the form of a book, with a gilded dedication on behalf of the RFU. This is followed by pages of signatures of member clubs, and some from further afield including, the South African Rugby Football Board, Queensland RFU, Otago, Transvaal, Racing Club de France and Stade Francais.
George Rowland Hill gave 49 years service to the RFU in various capacities on a completely voluntary basis. He remained one of the RFU representatives to the International Rugby Football Board until his death in 1928. In 1927 he became the first person to be knighted for services to the game. The presentation is a tribute not only to his incredible devotion to the game, but also to the respect and affection in which he was held throughout the world-wide game.
