Legendary Scottish international Ian Smith was one of the most potent of try-scorers in an era when tries were at a premium.
Smith’s first visit to Twickenham coincided with the victory over England on March 21, 1925 that clinched the first of their three Grand Slams. Smith, who was the world’s leading try scorer from 1932 until 1987 when Australia’s David Campese passed his 24 tries, failed to score in that match, but he went on to score two tries in Calcutta Cup matches on no fewer than four subsequent occasions.
He also ran in four tries against France in 1925, and repeated the feat in the same season against Wales, having crossed the Welsh line three times on his international debut the season before.
