The following article has been adapted from the original by Dai Llewellyn, which focused on two players. It has been changed to highlight only the selected inductee’s information.

Twickenham has a special place in Peter Winterbottom’s heart. He made his debut on the ground against the 1982 Wallabies, a match that was marked by victory for England but memorable for Erica Roe’s topless streak.

Not that Winterbottom noticed her. “Bill Beaumont was giving us the half-time captain’s talk and telling us to concentrate. The only thing I noticed was a gorilla-suited person, who came onto the pitch at the other end from Erica. I was looking at him and never caught a glimpse of her.”

“It was a great start to my international career being part of a victory,” says Winterbottom, the former Headingley and Harlequins flanker. But another Twickenham game, despite ending in defeat for England, is the one that remains uppermost in his memory.

“I think the World Cup final in 1991 is a great memory. Winning the first Grand Slam at the ground earlier that same year is right up there, as is the time we beat the All Blacks the following November. The place is filled with good memories for me.”
