England Under 16 selectors name squad for Hartpury training camp

  • Selectors name 72-man squad for England Under 16 training camp
  • Next step in selection for April international matches

The England Under 16 selectors have named a 72-man squad for a training camp at Hartpury College in Gloucestershire from February 12-14.

Selection follows last weekend’s Divisional Festival at Broadstreet RFC near Coventry where the South West beat the North 43-26 and London & SE beat the Midlands 26-14 in two entertaining contests.

The selectors have named 21 players from the South West, 18 each from the North and Midlands and 14 from London & SE plus Oliver Thorely of Cheltenham College and Gloucestershire in the squad for Hartpury.

International programme

The Hartpury training camp forms the next step in the selection process for the forthcoming programme of international matches, which will see England Under 16s play Italy Under 17s at Lichfield on April 1 and Wales Under 16s at Oxford University on April 6.

England North and England South will compete in the Wellington International Festival in Berkshire between March 30 and April 5 alongside Wales Under 16 A, France Under 16 A and B, Scotland Under 16s and the Under 17 teams from the United States, Belgium and the Netherlands.

The 72-strong group that was selected after the Divisional Festival will be divided into three squads during the Hartpury camp, where England Under 16s will play Gloucester Under 17s and England North will play England South. Both matches will be played on February 14.

England Under 16s will play Italy Under 17s at Lichfield on April 1 and Wales Under 16s at Oxford University on April 6.

England North and England South will compete in the annual Wellington International Festival at Wellington College in Berkshire from March 30 to April 5 alongside Wales Under 16 A, United States Under 17, France Under 16 A, France Under 16 B, Scotland Under 16, Belgium Under 17 and Netherlands Under 17.

The three squads will be named during the Hartpury camp and will start their warm-up matches there.

England Under 16 will play Gloucester Under 17 on February 14 while England North play England South on the same day.

England Under 16s will have a further training session at St Edward's School in Oxford from March 9-10, which will include a match against Northampton Under 17s on March 10 (11am).

England North and England South will train at Cokethorpe School in Oxfordshire on the same weekend with England South playing Leicester Under 17s on March 10 (11am) and England North taking on Wasps Under 17s at the same time.

At the Wellington International Festival, England North will play France B on March 31 (12.15pm), Netherlands Under 17s on April 2 (11am) and Belgium Under 17s on April 5 (11am).

England South play France A on March 31 at 2.30pm, Scotland Under 16 on April 3 (2.30pm) and USA Under 17s on April 5 (1.30pm).
