Wellingborough’s Colts team coach and groundsman Steve Mackie won the Volunteer of the Year Award at the recent Northamptonshire Sports Awards evening.

Mackie has been Wellingborough’s colts coach for several years and combines his voluntary role as groundsman at their Cut Throat Lane headquarters with his full-time job as a greenkeeper at a local golf club.

The other shortlisted candidates at the awards evening, held at Kettering Arena, were: John Chester (bowls), Stephen Poole (badminton) and Jan Randle (hockey).

Mackie’s Colts team, who won the East Midlands Colts League and East Midlands Referees’ Cup and reached the quarter-finals of the National Colts Cup, were also runners-up in the Team of the Year category behind Northamptonshire County Cricket Club, who won the Friends Life T20 competition in August and secured promotion in the County Championship.

The other shortlisted teams were: Wrenn School volleyball team, Moulton College’s rugby tens team and Corby Under 14s indoor tennis team.
